Postkard from Amerika: POLITICS AND RACE STYMIE IMMIGRATION REFORM

Immigration is a hot-button issue in the United States, and moves to initiate reforms to streamline and regularise the process are proving to be extremely contentious. Depending on who you ask, there are around 11 to 13 million illegal (or undocumented) people in the US, and they are here because there are jobs to be found and more money than what can be made back home. These workers toil in the jobs that Americans do not want – in agriculture, construction and sanitation.

Latin U.S. of America

The immigration in United States has always attracted my attention, particularly by the fact it has been since 1965 mostly a product of the Latin-American region, where a come from. And one of the aspects I consider more interesting is the demographic changings it is provoking in the US for the long term.

According to a projection done by Pew Research Center (Washington) in 2008, the number of Hispanics in the US will triple and represent the major part of American population growth in a 45 years-period, going from 14% in 2005 to 29% in 2050.

Hard lessons

This blog post is a journey through time and space. The look back at the last six weeks feels like a desperate attempt to hold a handful of sand. The specks fall through the fingers as lost pieces of puzzle, portraying the images I encountered on this journey. Chaotic gallery of faces, odors and feelings rushing into each other to create a thin cobweb, held together by a fragile sense of consistency.

Democratic National Convention and Brazil

It was a tiring three-day journey, but it was worthy. As I have been working with international issues for ten years, I've always wanted to cover the United States elections, and I am now in USA doing exactly that.
