'Forward, not back'

'Forward, not back'

Even before applying to WPI, there was a plan. If I was approved, I would stay almost one month more to cover the United States elections. It would be two dreams at a time, since I’ve always aspired to both participate in a fellowship and to cover the American elections.

The future past

The future past

The things I have lost during this fellowship were constantly in my mind in the days heading to the end. I lost a piece of my universal plug. A cosmetic cream. A bath sponge. I lost and found my medicines, contact lenses and comb. I almost lost my iPhone. And now I am going to lose nine friends.

All these lost things made me remember the beautiful poem "One Art", by Elizabeth Bishop, in which she says we must master the art of losing:

Seeing your own country as a foreigner

Seeing your own country as a foreigner

One of the goals of the WPI Fellowship is to make America understandable for the ten foreign journalists who each year travel throughout the country to get in touch with the different aspects of its society, its politics, its media, its people, its partisan divisions.

Latin U.S. of America

The immigration in United States has always attracted my attention, particularly by the fact it has been since 1965 mostly a product of the Latin-American region, where a come from. And one of the aspects I consider more interesting is the demographic changings it is provoking in the US for the long term.

According to a projection done by Pew Research Center (Washington) in 2008, the number of Hispanics in the US will triple and represent the major part of American population growth in a 45 years-period, going from 14% in 2005 to 29% in 2050.

An American passion called baseball

An American passion called baseball

Brazil is all about football – or soccer, as you call it in United States (I don’t know why). Many, many Brazilians go crazy with those 20 men running for 90 minutes after a ball with the only purpose to kick it inside a goal, while other two men in opposite sides of the field try to avoid this fate.

Democratic National Convention and Brazil

It was a tiring three-day journey, but it was worthy. As I have been working with international issues for ten years, I've always wanted to cover the United States elections, and I am now in USA doing exactly that.

Getting to know each other

Getting to know each other

The first fellow I’ve met after disembarking in United States was Neha Dixit, from India. For the very first time I’ve put my eyes on her I knew we would get along.

And it was not because she has tried to be nice or she has made me laugh with some stupid joke – the other way around must be true. It was just that empathy we feel for no reason at all for some people. And I was very lucky because she is my roommate in the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul (MN), our first stop in an adventure that will take us to ten States and 15 American cities in a two-month period.
