Disconnect between news, editorial teams unhealthy

U.S. newspapers are impressively “hanging on” despite a sustained onslaught by online media. All the top brands are no doubt feeling the pinch.

Print newspapers have lost nearly 52 per cent of their daily sales volumes, while online channels have registered an exponential growth in reach, almost three-fold in the last six years. But as the news media struggles to weather the storm created by changes in consumer behavior, not to mention sustained attacks by President Donald Trump, some pertinent issues have come up that require urgent deliberations by industry stakeholders.

From the Voice to VICE - a short history of VICE MEDIA

It is one of the most unusal success stories in the media business within the last two decades. What started in 1994 as a small printed punk magazine in Montreal has become a multi platform media corporation known as VICE media. Today the company has 1500 employees worldwide and an estimated value between 2.5 and 4 billion US Dollars.

The First Amendment, the Freedom of the Press and you
"Government shall make no law (…) abridging the freedom of speech or of the press". It is the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights from 1791 that manifests this fundamental freedom for the United States States of America - by that time a young democracy aged 15 years. As you may know a freedom as such never comes for free. In many parts of the world our ancestors had to fight for this freedom at some time. In far too many countries the people still have to fight for it. Often they pay the highest price you can imagine. They pay with their lives. And even if other countries have already achieved this fundamental freedom, you can never be sure that it is going to last forever. Freedom is not for free. There is a price we have to pay. At least pay some attention.

The State of the Media #2 - Do your own Ethics code

The circumstances and conditions under which journalist are working can widely differ. But no matter how diverse our daily routines may be, we often face similar moral questions and dilemmas. How do I deal with interview partners that demand money? Is it correct to accept a free travel offer? Can I post a photo on social media that some of my viewers and readers may find offending?

Big media companies usually have a code of conduct and clearly defined rules. But that is not always the case for smaller businesses, digital nomads or freelancers working on their own.

Latinos, the muscle of the US’ future

The first thing that I did when I arrived to Saint Paul on Friday August 8th for attending to the WPI Fellowship was turning on the TV to see what was on the news. I spent almost a day travelling from Caracas to Minnesota through the border with Colombia and had no clue about what had happened in my country and around the world in those long hours.
