Ground Zero: A Work in Progress

The Crater and the Flute

In German

By Matthias G. Bernold, WPI '05
Vienna, Austria

NEW YORK — Phillip Belgasso played his flute on the sidewalk near the fence that embraced the big crater. Every time a tourist stopped to hand over some change, Belgasso stopped playing and made sure the tourist took one of his sketches. Belgasso was not an ordinary street musician. Belgasso had a mission: He was an architect and his biggest-ever project was a Ground Zero memorial. …

Editor’s note: In this story filed to his newspaper in Vienna, Austria, WPI 2005 fellow Matthias Bernold summarized the projects being planned for Ground Zero and the state of the discussion 4 years after 9/11. More people than Phillip Belgasso had thoughts about what Ground Zero should look like in 5 years.
