Stephen J. Ward
Stephen Ward, Associate Professor at The Graduate School of Journalism, University of British Columbia, has 15 years of journalism experience as foreign reporter, editor and newsroom manager. Prof. Ward was The Canadian Press (CP) Bureau Chief in Vancouver from 1995 to 1998 and was CP’s only staff reporter in Europe from 1990 to 1994. Based in London, he covered major events such as the Gulf War, the Bosnian conflict, and the troubles in Northern Ireland.
Prof. Ward has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, and was a research fellow at the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University prior to joining the UBC School of Journalism. Prof. Ward teaches courses on media ethics and the law, critical thinking in journalism and media issues. His main research interest is journalism ethics, and news objectivity.
Prof. Ward is an executive officer of the Ethics Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. For the past two years, he had special responsibility for press freedom and responsibility issues. He currently is the division's liaison to the Committee for Concerned Journalists in the United States.
Prof. Ward has published articles and reviews on journalism ethics in the Journal of Mass Media Ethics, The Harvard International Journal of Press and Politics and other publications. He is currently completing a book on journalism ethics.
