Still not arrived

Seven days ago my earthly remains have arrived in Vienna after spending 9 weeks in the US. As my fellow fellows know, I haven’t spent a lot of time in one place, so at least I didn’t get used to a specific city or a specific hotel room. I have gotten used to my fellow fellows. I miss them so much, it hurts.

They say after a relationship you hurt half the length of time you were in this relationship. Although I have experienced otherwise, I hope this time it is true. And that after 3 ½ weeks from now, I will start to cherish the memories without missing them so badly.

Love, Peace and Frogs.

Love, Peace and Frogs - that is the slogan, reproduced countless times on T-Shirts, Mugs, bracelets and bags. All available in the gift store of the Rainforest Cafe. In Chicago there is one gigantic Rainforest Cafe which seems to be basically a theme-parked food chain in front of the hotel.

Taxes are a four letter word

There is no middle ground in the US. Or at least it seems like that from an European perspective. In Europe, we have a lot of middle ground. We call it: taxes. Because, even if the government does want to behave people in a certain way, they tend to leave your choices open, but they will try to make your decision easier by adding taxes on undesired products.

Tobacco is not only not healthy but also a cash cow for the government. The country of our Finnish fellow Olavi  taxes for instance the life out of liquor.

Time

Time. That is the currency for the world populace in a movie from 2011 called „In Time“ (I am sensing a little bit of a general theme here). Once you turn 25 you develop a digital clock, glowing from beneath your skin. The clock is ticking and you will live only one year more. It is beginning to turn up and tick. The movie is not very good, the IMDB Rating is 6.6. So you better either make your last days count or you try to somehow get more – time.

So this is about the first unofficial day at DNC

I tried to combine various elements to capture a little bit of the mood in the country, starting with the preparations of the DNC that seems like a huge playground for journalists and volunteers then frustrated democrats to what would be the expectations of Michelle Obama's speech on Tuesday Night. Don't be fooled, apart from the title, the piece is in German.

Daybreakers - the Minnesotean Vampire Lifestyle

Vampires grew to be the majority of the world populace in a movie called "Daybreakers" (2009). They were not hunted down anymore, but instead grew accustomed to living a normal "human" life, with the important difference, that they wouldn’t step outside their houses during daylight (as it still the case that sunlight is dangerous for them). But they have several devices in play for them: if they want to go for whatever reason to the countryside, they would walk into their garage, get into their car with the very deep tinted windows and drive away.
